The road
Ohio's answer to the roads people drive south for. OH-555 runs the length of the unglaciated hill country with elevation changes and blind crests for most of its 65 miles, through country empty enough that the road was never straightened out.
Worth knowing
- Very little of the route is straight, and the elevation changes are constant
- Almost no towns, traffic lights, or reasons to stop
- Deep hollows and ridge lines through Appalachian foothills
Before you go
- Coal and gravel trucks use this road. Assume the far side of every blind crest is occupied.
- Pavement quality varies sharply — patched sections and gravel wash appear without warning.
- Long gaps with no fuel and thin phone coverage. Fill up in Zanesville.
Best season
May to October; avoid after ice, the surface is unforgiving
